Pimping up your fish tank
Firstly a few don’t’s! Don’t ever be tempted to line the bottom of your fish tanks with beach sand, or building sand that you buy from builder’s merchants. If you are going to pimp up your fish tank with sand, then you need to buy the sand that you find in pet shops. This stuff is the correct article and is sterile. The stuff you find on the beach is littered with toxins and disease that will kill your fish.
Don’t put any old wood in your fish tank!
The same goes for bits of wood you find outdoors. If you pimp up your fish tank with this wood then you will introduce disease and chemicals to the water which will kill your fish. If you want to pimp it out with wood then buy it from a pet shop. They have wood that is free from all sorts of nasty’s and harmful chemicals, so you can be sure that you are not killing your fish.
Fancy fish tank plants
If you want to trip out your fish tank with fancy plants, then enquire at your local pet shop for ones that will suit your fish. Some fish do not like certain plants, some love them and will eat them. There are other plants that will make your fish want to breed. Ask at a reputable pet shop, and speak to a qualified person for the correct advice. You can also check out the internet for masses of advice on the types of plants you can put with your fish.
At your local pet shop, or online with approved sellers, you can find all sorts of statues and figures to put in your fish tank. These are normally sterile and made of safe resins so that they will not leech chemicals into the water, or bring nasty germs into the water. The bigger pet shops may also carry different coloured gravels and pebbles to line the bottom of your fish tank with. This is cool way of adding a little color and pizzazz.
Another way of thinking outside the box, is to put a photograph or poster behind your fish tank, so that you can see it when you look through. You could put an underwater scene at the back, or a picture of Jaws the shark snapping. This is a fun way of adding a bit of interest to your tank, and a way of giving your fish something to look at. Don’t put any pictures inside the tank because it will harm your fish!!
